The Government of Russia has decided to build a second large-scale multicargo port on the Black Sea coast, on the Taman peninsula. This decision is part of Russia’s plans to export more coal, iron ore, grain and other cargoes through its southern harbours. Novorossiysk at the Black Sea coast, the country's largest port, is approaching capacity, is very close to the city and faces environmental constraints. All this results in limited potential for further growth.
port development
The Taman peninsula already hosts a 10.5 mtpa privately-built oil and gas terminal. Further development implies the construction of a number of dry cargo handling terminals, between 2013 and 2018. Taman is the Caucasus’ westernmost peninsula, bounded on the north by the Sea of Azov, on the west by the Strait of Kerch and on the south by the Black Sea.
